Last month, while visiting my mother, the queen of the properly set table, I got a shock. My mom has been a stickler for cloth napkins, table cloths and silverware at every meal I can ever remember having in our home. She has never uttered the words plastic forks, knives or spoons, and for all intensive purposes was against anything less than real dinnerware of any form.

But, she was hosting a family get together for my step-father, and I suppose the number of those invited exceeded her supplies. Or, maybe she thought she was making a statement since she is not really a fan of his side of the family. Well, that is neither here nor there, but something for me to question at a later date I suppose. She served on break resistant dinnerware. The plates looked like any of the others she has used in the past, but you knew instantly from the weight of them that they were closer in relation to the plastic plates. When I inquired, she looked at me as though I must have been living under a rock for the last ten years not to know these plates were scratch resistant, chip resistant, stain resistant and dishwasher safe. Truthfully, I think she was just resistant to going all out for her guests, but the plates were so nice I don’t think anyone felt her resistance.

In the winter months we all clamour around the fireplace in the family room at night. It is such a peaceful scene, which can be rare when you live with teenagers. Whomever said the hearth is the heart of the home knew what they were talking about, even if it was 1768 when they proclaimed it to be so.

Now that all of our children have learned to lay and set a fire in the fireplace, the thrill is gone. The excitement of properly stacking the kindling, or the dried lavender, along with toilet paper cardboard rolls, or newspaper underneath a bed of well situated wood no longer garners applauds. We all just want the fire up and heating as soon as is humanly possible.

And while it might surprise you, we have taken a fancy to those ready to go logs made of recycled materials. I know, I know it almost seems like cheating. Yet, they are so efficient, and after a long hard day out of the house we all want to sink into our well defined seats in the living room and warm up with a fire. Now, I could outline all of the virtues of these logs, but I instead am going to rest on the importance of efficiency and convenience. They are just great, enough said.

Bar stools are a modern must have for any kitchen or dining area. The advantages of having them in the home are plentiful, being both versatile and diverse meaning that they will fit in to any type of decor. The most probable explanation for the huge success of bar stools over recent years is down to their slim-line, modern and chic appearance. Many today take up minimal space in the kitchen, but their striking design means that they don’t go unnoticed, and in many cases they can actually create a completely new look for your kitchen.

They are available in a variety of materials, so you’ll be able to find one to match your kitchen work tops, cabinets or appliances, and some of the most popular ones tend to have a seat made from either faux or real leather. The quality of the material, the myriad of designs, and wide size range of the seats means that there really is something for everyone. Another major benefit of real leather is that many leather seats are well padded to create extra support and comfort, enabling all those involved to get the most out of their new seating area.

For those looking to make a statement there are gloss finish stools, available in a range of bright and illuminating colours. These are great as they can either compliment an already vibrant area, or add a welcome splash of colour and excitement to a more neutral space. Perspex also has much the same effect, but being translucent it offers a lighter visual space.

Interestingly, wooden stools are being increasingly sought after, with many admiring their sophisticated design and homely, rustic feel and charm. Strong yet natural, wood is a tactile and timeless material fit for any location.

The choice that customers have when choosing their kitchen bar stools isn’t limited to the seat however. The frame and bases of the majority of bar stools now come in a choice of either mirror finish chrome or satin finish brushed steel, and in a variety of shapes and sizes with differing functions ensuring that you are able to adapt them to your home environment.

Many come with a gas hydraulic permitting family members to adjust the height of their stools to suit their individual needs and comfort, also giving the option of lowering and then neatly tucking the stool away under a breakfast bar when not being used. 360 degree rotation also makes access to any bar table or counter all the easier.

Finally and maybe one of the most important factors when choosing a kitchen stool is its colour. Thanks to the surge in popularity, many stools are created in a variety of colours and shades, giving the buyer a much wider choice to choose from and meaning that you won’t have to settle for one, only in the colour that you want. This has created greater flexibility and choice, really ensuring that you can have the perfect kitchen.

When preparing your house for a flatshare there are many things that you need to consider. Allowing someone else to take control over a portion of your home can be incredibly difficult for some people and you need to prepare yourself for the experience. The person who rents a room from you will have control of that space, to a certain extent.

If this is the first time you have let out a room in your home then you need to make sure that you thoroughly vet the person who is going to be staying in your house. You also need to draw up a contract for your new tenant to sign. Depending on how many rooms you let out you may also need to apply for a licence from your local council. You may also need to make improvements to your house if you are hoping to let it out, including buying new furniture if you are advertising the room as furnished. You need to make sure that your home comes up the standard expected by your local authority as well. You will be able to find more information about this from the government’s website.

There are a great number of things that you need to consider when renting out a room and it can be hard work. But if you have a property in London or another large city then you may make a considerable amount of money from renting out a room, which makes all the extra work worthwhile. In the end you need to weigh up the pros and the cons of renting out a room. Although you have to go through quite a few legal steps, having someone else in your home can be enjoyable. You can also cover mortgage payments and even make some money.

Perhaps you have been faced with this, a dinner guest that is a vegetarian. All your standby dishes do not seem to apply. Even if they are all veggie, they are more like side dishes, then mains. You get the news of your vegetarian party member, and plenty runs through your mind, do I just make vegetarian dishes, and hope everyone is content, or do I do double work and prepare variations?

Well, whether you opt to work double or not, you must find something to please the vegetarian. Nobody wants a guest to feel like they were an afterthought, so something special appears to be in order, but that too means extra work. Well, get too it, and find solace in the knowledge that you will know have a fab recipe under your belt for the future.

I will tell you that personally I think steering clear of traditional dishes that would involve meat are best left alone. For meat lovers, being served a spinach lasagne, or all vegetable pot pie is not always a happy moment. Instead, dishes such as a mushroom tart, or a quiche will not leave anyone feeling that they were missing any ingredient. This way all should be content, and hopefully satisfied.

I was speaking with my sister in law, Jana, last evening and she brought up the fact that she had experienced a bit of an epiphany while deliberating whether to get cover for buildings, contents or both with Direct Line house insurance. While this statement struck me as curious, it did not necessarily sound like something that would prove to be all that interesting to me personally.

As a bit of background, I should probably tell you that she and my brother do not have children, and have thus had a nice amount of money to invest in properties. In addition, they have become collectors of some rather expensive artworks and furnishings. Therefore, I thought this route of conversation might involve things that I am not privy to, as our money seems to evaporate upon receipt. But, I have definitely monopolised numerous other calls with topics that must not even remotely interest her, and could easily accept that she deserved the same time to cover what she would like to chat about.

Due to their financial strength and savvy investments, I have always gotten the impression that they would be the one’s to offer us advice, and not the other way around. Never have they inquired of us about how something should be done, or handled. But this is where it gets interesting. While Jana was completing the home contents list, and working with the home contents calculator on the site she realised that they’re living amongst clutter. Bingo, this is when she thought of me.

First off, I must admit to feeling utter relief once I realised she would not be asking me for any guidance on selecting insurance. Though I could offer up my own opinions on such, I would much prefer offering up assistance in my area of expertise, the actual home itself. Secondly, Jana and I often struggle to find things to talk about that interest both of us, and then poof here was one, excellent.

I asked her to send me a copy of the contents lists she had made for the insurance company, and advised that I would read through and analyse how to approach pairing things down. Then we would get together to discuss my ideas, and come up with a plan of action. To be totally honest, I felt really good about being able to help out, and to share my skills and strengths. Love how it took house insurance to bring us closer together. I can barely wait to break down that clutter, and show her the results she is seeking. Look out clutter here I come.

With all of the interest in genealogy of the last couple of years, it makes perfect sense to “branch out” and make your own family tree. There are prefabricated ones that are lovely and professional looking, not to mention only call for the owner to insert names. What’s more is that the interest has opened up many new resources to research, and confirm relations. And should you be interested in finding help, there are even groups to join that will provide you with a ton of assistance.

For many years, my aunt was the chief genealogist in our family, and her efforts were much appreciated by us all. She was really into it, and it brought her much pleasure to compile the results she found. Unfortunately she passed away a few years ago, and the project remained incomplete. We have since had our family tree professionally researched, and had the information turned into a decorative piece of wall art. For gifts this year, we had a smaller version made for our extended family members, so they too can enjoy the knowledge. To say that the artwork is perfectly situated in our family room would be an understatement. I would say it is now our crowning jewel.

So, I had a message on my answering machine from my sister in law telling me that she wanted to talk to me about something to do with home insurance. Immediately, that talking dog who says, Looking for home insurance quotes? Oh yes! Try Churchill home insurance, popped into my head. Honestly, I could not begin to imagine what she would want to talk to me about insurance for.

But after a second or two of mulling that over, and shaking the image of the talking dog from my mind’s eye, I guess the idea of television made me remember that I had a question of my own for her. It is an idea I want to share with you guys, because I think you might be interested in doing something similar too.

I want to do a family version of Come Dine With Me over the holidays season. Both she and I love that program, and are competitive so it might be a ton of fun. The other family members might take a bit of coaxing, but as long as we keep things light hearted, and keep the grand prize simple it could be a real blast for us all.

Aside from liking the premise of it, I think it is a great way to liven up the holidays. We spend a great deal of time at our relatives homes, and they at ours already, so that foundation is already laid. The holidays will give a theme to work around, and give us a diversion from the lack of gifts that will be placed under the trees this year. We can make great food the feature, and play down the gifts.

Only flaw I see is that Stan will want to play the role of the narrator, and crack jokes while filming this whole thing. I love the idea of having it recorded, but am not eager to do the majority of our evening’s preparations all by myself. Doesn’t sound quite fair if everyone else will be doing their work as couples. Well, it is in the formative stages as far as ideas go. And I need to get the others interested before I get bogged down with details I suppose.

Just hope that I have a quick answer for my sister in law regarding her home insurance question, because I want to tell her about this contest and get her involved in the organising too. But, I do not want to be rude, and since she already left a message I have to wait my turn patiently. This will be extremely hard to do because I think she is going to go crazy for this idea, and know just what the prize for the winners should be.

For many people, buying a radiating unit may seem like a simple task. With the advent of a global marketplace, there are thousands of options available for consumers looking to buy radiators. The radiator was originally invented in the 1800s by Franz San Galli, a Russian businessman. It was originally used in many Russians homes to provide central heating, quickly spreading in popularity around the world.

There are several types of radiators currently available for consumers: steam units, oil powered units, electric units, and hot water units.

Steam Radiators:

A steam radiating system usually consists of a central boiler, powering many radiating systems throughout a home or building complex. A steam radiating unit is often found in apartment buildings and condos, providing a centralised and cheap form of heating for tenants. Many steam powered units don’t have thermostats, and can’t be adjusted to fit environmental temperatures. The tenant or apartment-renter usually has the option to turn off steam flowing into a unit, in the event that a room is adequately warm.

Hot Water Radiators:

A hot water radiating unit works like a steam unit, powered by water from a central boiler. Many hot water units are used in smaller buildings and individual homes. A hot water radiating unit usually can’t pump water to a high altitude, making it inefficient for use in large buildings or apartment complexes.

Electric Radiators:

An electric unit is portable, allowing it to be used anywhere around a home. Electric units can be used as towel radiators one day, and used to provide heating in a bedroom the next day. Many modern electric units are built to be water resistant, allowing them to be safely used in bathrooms as towel radiators.

When buying a radiating unit, it’s important to find one that fits a specific need in the home. An electric radiating unit can be a great way to provide heating for a large portion of a home, with smaller units providing heating for specific rooms in a home.

When installing a portable electric radiating unit to heat an entire home, it’s important to place to unit on a ground floor. Since heat rises, a radiating unit installed in an upper room can allow residual heat to escape through the attic and room. Conversely, putting a radiator in a basement or recessed area in a home can lead to heat loss through the ground.

Oil Powered Radiators:

Portable electric units radiate heat through one of two mediums: oil, or a heat-retaining solid. An oil based radiating unit pumps oil over an electric element, providing continuous temperatures across the entire unit. A radiating unit with a solid heat transfer medium usually contains granite, or another ceramic material. A series of heating elements are usually embedded throughout the ceramic material, and can retain heat for hours.

A radiator can be a great way for homeowners to save money on their electricity bills, provide localised temperature control for rooms, and add a stylish appliance to a home.

Everyone should have an emergency supply kit. You might respond by saying that you do not live anywhere near a fault line, hurricanes are unheard of, you have the wrong conditions for tornadoes, and a tsunami is literally impossible. Ok, so the most common things that people might make an emergency kit might not be your concern, but things do happen that are unexpected too.

So, the kit, which again I will state EVERYONE should have the following (with some additions for areas facing known disasters or problems. In addition, every member of the household should know where it is kept.

3 gallons of water per person

(This will be for both drinking and sanitation, and is meant to last three days.)

3 Day supply of non- perishable food items

1 Can opener

Battery powered radio (with extra batteries)

First Aid kit

1 dust mask for each person

1 packet of moist wipes per person

1 large flashlight (with extra batteries)

1 small flashlight (with extra batteries)
